Gary Union Station
Why do people leave beautiful buildings to decay? It is quite sad and it is evident when you look at the Gary Union Station.
Gary Union Station opened in 1906 to accommodate steel plants in Chicago. The trains that went through the station carried supplies and workers to the plants. The art- deco station was built primarily of reinforced steel and concrete, which makes the outside look like the building is in decent shape even though the inside is crumbling. The station was shut down in the 1950s and it has not been maintained since. The beautiful grand hall is hollowed out and ever single window has either been blown out or broken by vandals. The station, unfortunately, has turned into an eyesore, like most of Gary. There have been many propositions to fix up the abandoned station, which is on Indiana's Top Ten Endangered list, but they all fell through. As it looks right now, the building will probably ingloriously rot away. |
